BCBA-Led Assessments

Children's Assessment Services Across Canada

Advance Therapy provides comprehensive children's assessments that identify your child's strengths, needs, and learning style — and turn that understanding into a personalized ABA therapy plan. Every assessment is completed by a certified BCBA (Board Certified Behavior Analyst) with the support of trained ABA therapists, and is available in your home or virtually, wherever your family lives.

With 10+ years of experience supporting children on the autism spectrum, we know that great therapy starts with truly understanding the child. No two children are alike, so no two of our assessments — or the plans that follow — are ever the same.

What Is a Children's Assessment?

A children's assessment is a structured evaluation of your child's communication, social, behavioural, and daily-living skills. Using direct observation, parent interviews, and evidence-based assessment tools, a BCBA builds a complete picture of where your child is today — and exactly which skills to build next.

The result is not just a report. It's the foundation of an individualized ABA program with clear, measurable goals your family can see progress against.

Assessment Components

What Our Assessments Include

Every assessment is tailored to your child's age, needs, and your family's goals. Depending on your child, it may include:

  • Skills Assessments

VB-MAPP, ABLLS-R, AFLS — evidence-based tools that measure language, learning, social, and daily-living skills against developmental milestones.

  • Functional Behaviour Assessment (FBA)

Identifies why challenging behaviours happen, so we can teach positive alternatives — never just manage symptoms.

  • Direct Observation

We watch how your child plays, communicates, and learns in their natural environment, at home or online.

  • Parent & Caregiver Interview

You know your child best. Your insights about routines, strengths, and concerns shape the entire evaluation.

  • Written Report & Recommendations

A clear, jargon-free summary of findings, priority goals, and recommended therapy hours.

Note for families seeking a diagnosis: a formal autism diagnosis is provided by a physician or psychologist. If your child has not yet been diagnosed, we'll guide you through the diagnostic route in your province and can begin skill-focused support in the meantime.

Is This Right for You?

Who Is a Children's Assessment For?

Our assessments support children and young adults on the autism spectrum, as well as children with related developmental or behavioural needs. An assessment is a helpful next step if your child:

Parent participating in a caregiver interview during their child's assessment
  • Has a new autism diagnosis and needs a starting point for early intervention or ABA therapy

  • Struggles with communication, social interaction, or daily routines

  • Shows challenging behaviours at home, daycare, or school

  • Is starting ABA therapy, or switching providers, and needs an updated plan

  • Hasn't been re-assessed in over a year and may have outgrown their current goals

Our Process

How the Assessment Process Works

  1. Free Consultation

We start with a conversation. Tell us about your child, your concerns, and your goals, and we'll explain exactly what to expect.

  2. Comprehensive Evaluation

A certified BCBA assesses your child using proven tools, direct observation, and your input as a parent — in your home or virtually.

  3. Findings & Recommendations

You receive a clear written report covering your child's strengths, skill gaps, and priority goals, explained in plain language.

  4. Personalized Therapy Plan

We translate the findings into an individualized ABA program with measurable goals, supported by parent coaching so progress continues at home — and updated continuously as your child grows.

Based on your child's assessment and individual needs, our team may recommend eitherhome based aba therapy or Aba therapy at daycare, depending on where your child requires the most support.

Does Funding Cover a Children's Assessment?

In many cases, yes. Provincial autism funding programs, private insurance, extended health benefits, and Jordan's Principle can often be applied toward assessments and the ABA therapy that follows. Coverage varies by province and plan — our team will walk you through what's available for your family. Explore our ABA therapy funding options for more details.

Frequently Asked Questions About Children's Assessments

How long does a children's assessment take?
Most assessments are completed across one to three sessions, depending on your child's age and needs. You receive the written report and recommendations shortly after, and therapy can begin right away.
Who conducts the assessment?
A certified BCBA conducts and supervises every assessment, supported by trained ABA therapists. The same clinical team then oversees your child's therapy program.
Can the assessment be done virtually?
Yes. Virtual assessments combine live observation, structured activities, and parent interviews over secure video — a practical option for families outside major cities or facing long local waitlists.
Is this the same as an autism diagnostic assessment?
No. A diagnosis is made by a physician or psychologist. Our assessment identifies your child's skills and needs to build an effective therapy plan — and if your child isn't diagnosed yet, we'll help you navigate that process in your province.
Does my child need a diagnosis before being assessed?
No. We assess children with and without a formal diagnosis, including children with related developmental or behavioural needs.
How often should my child be re-assessed?
We recommend a formal re-assessment every 6–12 months. Because we collect data in every session, your child's plan is also adjusted continuously between formal assessments.
